Construction in the Netherlands constantly needs reinforced concrete workers (in Dutch betonvlechter or ijzervlechter). Housing, bridges, tunnels, and industrial buildings are being constructed, and craftsmen from Romania are appreciated for their experience and seriousness. Here’s what the job entails and how to get hired.

What a reinforced concrete worker does in the Netherlands

  • reads reinforcement plans and prepares rebar;
  • installs and ties reinforcements for foundations, slabs, columns, and walls;
  • works with welded meshes and prefabricated elements;
  • collaborates with formwork and pouring teams.

What is required of you

  • experience as a reinforced concrete worker, usually at least 1–2 years;
  • VCA certificate (safety on site). It is required by almost all construction companies in the Netherlands. If you don’t have it, some companies will help you obtain it;
  • ability to read reinforcement plans;
  • good physical condition and availability to work outdoors;
  • basic English is a plus.

Salary and conditions

In construction, the collective labor agreement of the sector (CAO Bouw & Infra) usually applies, and skilled craftsmen generally earn above the legal minimum wage of €14.99 gross per hour. The salary depends on experience, the project, and the number of hours. Many positions also provide accommodation, transport to the site, and work equipment.

Some jobs are done with an employee contract, others as independent (ZZP). The difference matters for taxes and insurance, so always ask what type of contract you will receive.

Schedule

The usual schedule on site is from Monday to Friday, approximately 40 hours a week, starting early in the morning. Weather can influence the schedule, especially in winter.
