Forklift operators are among the most sought-after workers in warehouses in the Netherlands. The country is a logistics hub in Europe, and large companies (distribution centers, transport, retail) are constantly hiring people who know how to operate a forklift. Here’s what you need to know if you want to work as a forklift operator in the Netherlands.

Heftruck, reachtruck, EPT: what types of forklifts are there

  • Heftruck: the classic, front forklift used for loading and unloading.
  • Reachtruck: forklift with a retractable mast, for high shelves in warehouses.
  • EPT / pallet truck (electric pallet jack) and order picker, for moving pallets and picking orders.

In job ads, you will often see the requirement “ervaring met reachtruck” or “heftruckcertificaat,” meaning experience with a specific type of forklift.

Do I need a certificate?

Employers in the Netherlands are required to ensure that those who operate forklifts are trained. Therefore, most require a forklift operator certificate or proof of experience. The forklift operator certificate from Romania (ISCIR) is a serious advantage, and some companies even provide a short course upon hiring.

How much does a forklift operator earn in the Netherlands

The salary cannot be less than the legal minimum of €14.99 gross per hour (from July 1, 2026). Experienced forklift operators, especially on reachtrucks, usually earn more, and night shifts and weekend shifts come with bonuses. A vacation allowance of at least 8% is added. Details about gross and net can be found in the article about minimum wage in the Netherlands.

Schedule and conditions

  • usually 38–40 hours per week, often in 2 or 3 shifts;
  • working in large warehouses, sometimes at low temperatures (cold storage warehouses);
  • protective equipment provided (boots, reflective vest);
  • many positions offer accommodation and organized transport.

What you need to apply

  • valid ID card or passport;
  • experience or forklift operator certificate (preferably);
  • basic English for instructions and safety;
  • a CV clearly stating what types of forklifts you have worked with. You can create it for free with our CV assistant.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a forklift operator without experience?

It’s more difficult, but it’s possible. You can start as a warehouse worker (order picker) and receive forklift training after a few months.

Is the certificate from Romania recognized?

Most employers accept it as proof of training, especially if you also have experience. However, some still conduct a practical test or an internal course upon hiring.
